City receives a clean state audit

August 7, 2012

The Washington State Auditor’s Office has found no discrepancies in a pair of audits conducted on the city of Deer Park’s financial records.
The office’s accountability audit for Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2011, looked at various city internal controls and audit procedures for various areas, including contracts/agreements, general disbursements, utility billing/revenue, payroll and open public meetings/records laws.

Zac Farnam leaves Stags to join Grizzlies

Zac Farnam, who has given a decade of his football life to the Deer Park program as a player and later as an assistant coach, is heading north this season.
Farnam has taken over the duties of the head football coach at Newport High School.
A Spokane native, Farnam came to Deer Park as a fifth grader and became acquainted with football as a middle schooler. A 2002 DPHS grad, he played quarterback, running back, wide receiver and cornerback under head coach Doug McGill. Farnam was part of the 2000 Great Northern League football championship team.

Shawn R. Egle, 53

August 7, 2012

Shawn Roberts Egle passed away on July 26, 2012, in Littleton, Colo., at Porter House Hospice Center.
She was born on Dec. 8, 1958, in Seattle to Ron and Vicki Roberts. The family moved to Spokane in 1960 and to Deer Park in 1967.
Shawn graduated from Deer Park High School in 1977. She loved representing DPHS in her first love, gymnastics, in state competition four years in a row. She also did the same thing in track.
Earning gymnastics scholarships, she went to Spokane Community College and Washington State University, then back to SCC for a degree as a cardiopulmonary technician.

Gary E. Bell, 74

Former area real estate agent Gary Edger Bell, 74, passed away on Aug. 4, 2012.
Born on March 18, 1938, at Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Hilma and Dwight Bell, he graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1956.
After graduation he served in the Army. Upon his discharge, he moved to Dillon, Mont., to work road construction with Took Brothers Construction. It was in Dillon that he met and married Agnes Shafer in April 1962.
The couple moved to Bonney Lake, Wash., when he went to work for Boeing. They later purchased property between Deer Park and Chattaroy and built their home.

Rose G. Gilbert, 95

August 7, 2012

Rose G. Gilbert, 95, was born in Saskatchewan, Canada, and moved to Deer Park in 1958. She was a devout member of the Eagles and Church of the Wildwood since 1999.
Rose was a wonderful member and friend to many people. Her many interests included quilt making, crocheting for disabled veterans, grandchildren, family and many friends. No matter the craft Rose enjoyed them as well as special knick-knacks.
Rose will be greatly missed but her beautiful hand-crafted gifts will be long enjoyed.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Tom; and a son, Bill, 69.

James E. Calmes, 70

Jim Calmes passed away on July 17, 2012, fighting a good fight to the end from complications of his lung cancer resulting in leukemia, with his family at his side.
He was one of our nation’s heroes, a Air Force veteran, but to his family, he was so much more. He was the father and husband that are the backbone of our country, a man to look up to. He will be so missed. God got a good one!
Jim was born at Pearl River, La., on Jan. 7, 1942, to Charles and Ella Calmes.

Betty L. Cuff, 59

August 7, 2012

A memorial service was July 25 at Woodland Cemetery, Deer Park, with the Rev. Daniel Berg officiating, for longtime Deer Park resident Betty Lou Cuff, 59, who passed away on July 17, 2012.
Born on Nov. 6, 1952, to William and Alma Cuff, she attended school in Deer Park before graduating high school in Spokane.
She worked at Radio Shack and the Salty Dog in Deer Park before volunteering at the GreenHouse Community Center for the past eight years.
She is survived by two brothers, Leo and Jack; and one sister, Bonnie.
Lauer Funeral Home, Deer Park was in charge of arrangements.

Free swimming makes a big splash

The city of Deer Park’s offer of free swimming at the municipal pool this summer has made a big splash with area youngsters (and their parents).
The 70-year-old facility, which came close to being shut down this summer because of budget concerns, has attracted scores of youngsters over the past two weeks as temperatures easily topped 90 degrees during the day.
The pool averaged well over a 100 patrons a day during the recent heat wave. On July 12, the number of pool patrons hovered near 200.

DNR boosts area's fire danger

The Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced today an elevated fire danger rating and burn restrictions on DNR-protected lands in Spokane County and the area encompassed by Stevens County Fire Districts No. 1 and 2.
The fire danger rating will increase from “moderate” to “high.”
Pend Oreille County and Stevens County, outside Fire Districts 1 and 2, will remain at “low.”

Deer Park swaps elementary school principals

Deer Park School District officials have decided to swap elementary school administrators for the upcoming school year.
Deer Park Elementary School Principal Michele Miller will now take over the same duties at Arcadia Elementary School. Arcadia Principal Bonnie Remington will move to DPES.
Remington has worked at Arcadia for 17 years and Miller at DPES for 14 years.
Superintendent Becky Cooke said it is unusual for principals to stay at one school for that long a period.
The switch will give the pair a “fresh start,” Cooke added.
