Three hurt in U.S. 395 accident

Three people were injured in a two-car accident at the U.S. Highway 395 and Crawford Avenue intersection on Wednesday afternoon.
None of the names of the persons involved in the accident were immediately released.
The driver and passenger in one of the vehicles, a minivan, suffered minor injuries and were taken to a Spokane hospital as a precautionary measure. An infant in the minivan was unhurt.
The driver of the other car, who needed to be cut of the vehicle by emergency crews, also sustained minor injuries.

Joyce Cox, 89

A private family service is planned for longtime Chattaroy resident Joyce Cox, 89, who passed away on May 27, 2014, at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.
Born on Jan. 13, 1925, in Sioux City, Iowa, she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Deer Park.
Two sons, Michael and Danny, predeceased her.
She is survived by her husband, Tom Cox; one daughter, Cathie (Rick) Torres; one son, Tom Cox II; one daughter-in-law, Lorayne Cox; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Betty J. Kiser, 86

Betty June Kiser was born on March 19, 1928, in Lewiston, Mont. And entered into rest on May 26, 2014.
She was the daughter of Ivan Merle and Edna May (Klingler) Gordy. She was the oldest of five children, including Donna, Eugene, Sandy and Michael.
Betty was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Lowell Adelbert Kiser.

Frost places 38th at state golf tourney

Deer Park’s Catelyn Frost placed 38th at last week’s state Class 2A golf tournament at The Classic Golf Club in
Frost, the first Lady Stag to make the first round cut, shot a 103-111 over the par 72 course. Teammate Sierra Lewis did not qualify for the final round after shooting a 114 last Wednesday.
Fife’s Kendall Gray won the individual championship with a 79-80=159 showing over the two days.
Defending champion Bellingham won the team title with 98, easily outdistancing runner-up Hockinson’s 73 score.
Deer Park did not qualify anyone for the boys’ tournament.

Charlotte S. Hudson, 68

May 29, 2014

Charlotte Susan (Ochs) Hudson, 68 years of life, passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2014, at Sacred Heart Hospital from complications of abdominal surgery.
Charlotte was born on Dec. 14, 1945 in Colfax, Wash., to Virgil and Elizabeth Ochs. Being an only child she was a bit spoiled, but she had a wonderful childhood and was very close to her parents who both have preceded her in death.

Filing period attracts plenty of candidates

Seventh District Sen. Brian Dansel, who defeated fellow Republican John Smith in a special election last November, will face another GOP election challenge this fall.
Colville’s Tony Booth has filed for the position. No other candidate filed during last week’s sign-up period.
Dansel will not be the only Seventh District legislator facing an election challenge this year. Incumbent Shelly Short, a Republican from Addy, will face a November general election challenge from Mead Libertarian James R. Aker.

Lady Stags win playoff opener

The Deer Park softball team, led by an 8-run second inning, advanced into the double-elimination round of the District VII tournament with an easy 11-1 win over the Pullman Greyhounds on Thursday.
The Lady Stags, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, found themselves trailing 1-0 as the Greyhounds took advantage of some early wildness by Deer Park pitcher Kylie Sweeney. Deer Park quickly tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Siera English.

Lady Rams earn NE-A softball tourney's No. 2 seed

The Riverside High School softball team clinched the upcoming District VII tournament’s second seed with a 6-3 win over the Medical Lake Cardinals on Saturday in the final game of the regular season.
Having lost the lost the first game of the doubleheader 6-4, Saturday’s second game set up a showdown where the winner would earn the second seed and a first round bye in the district tournament.
The Lady Rams (14-4) struck first with a pair of runs in the second inning, highlighted by RBI from Kyra Phillips and Kendra Aronson.

Esther E. Luce, 95

May 10, 2014

Esther Luce passed away peacefully on May 7, 2014, at the age of 95.
She was born on Dec 5, 1918, to Mary and Charles Wright in Lapwai, Idaho. Esther was the second of five children; Jessie, Esther, Calvin, Janie and Francis. Francis Hawk is her only remaining sibling.
She was preceded in death also by her parents; her husband, Isaac; her son, Larry Luce; and one grandson, Brad Yochum.

Tribune columnist wins NOWA awards

Longtime Deer Park Tribune columnist Alan Liere received a pair of “Excellence of Craft” awards at the The Northwest Outdoor Writer's Association (NOWA) at the group’s annual conference in Polson, Mont., on April 26.
Liere earned a third place award in the column of the year category for his “Scratches on the Wall” column in the Tribune. He also earned a third place award in the fishing article category for his Tribune story “A Day on the Ice.”
