Michael J. Talbot, 69

April 8, 2013

Michael James Talbot, 69, a resident of Clayton, formerly of Seattle, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2013.
He is the father of David Talbot of Clayton and the grandfather of Jessica Molina and Steven and Dustin Talbot. His sisters are Connie Osbourn and Karen Axelson.
Born in 1943 at Seattle, he attended school and graduated from high school there and served briefly with the U.S. Air Force.
Mr. Talbot was employed as a transit operator with King County Metro Transit.

WDFW unveils 'Fish Washington' logo

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife now has a new set of “Fish Washington” logos designed to help symbolize the state’s many great fishing opportunities.
WDFW tallied more than 1,800 votes on new logo design via the department website and Facebook page. Now, with a few tweaks based on public suggestions, the winning set of logos has been chosen. The logos selected depict trout and bass with backgrounds of Washington state waters and wilderness.

WSP investigators find plenty of stolen property in area house & storage unit

A treasure trove of stolen property was recovered at a rental home on Arlington Road north of Deer Park this week.
A half dozen stolen cars were discovered on April 3 after the tenants were evicted. A local towing company spent most of the day removing the cars, which were eventually returned to their rightful owners.

Property crime task force created

Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich along with Spokane Police Chief Frank Straub, Liberty Lake Police Chief Brian Asmus, Airway Heights Police Chief Lee Bennett, Cheney Police Chief John Hensley and Lt. Andy Boyle from the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office have announced the formation of a regional Property Crime Task Force.

Viola B. Sande, 92

April 2, 2013

Viola Beatrice Sande, age 92, died on March 26, 2013 in Spokane.
She was born on June 9, 1920, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, the last surviving of 15 brothers and sisters. She married Krist Sande on Dec. 19, 1940, and he died August 24, 1998.
She is survived by a son, Earl Sande and wife Geraldine; a daughter-in-law, Marie and husband Denny Lloyd; nine grandchildren, Cheryl, Krissy, Brandon, Samara, Jared, Brianna, Tina, Sherry and Brian; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Gary Sande, who died on May 13, 2007.

Berg leaving Deer Park for Marysville

The Deer Park School Board will begin work this week to find a replacement for Superintendent Becky Berg, who submitted her resignation (effective June 30) to take a similar position with the Marysville School District.
The school board is expected to meet with representatives from Educational Service District No. 101 to map out a strategy to find Berg’s replacement.
The school board used ESD 101 resources in 2010 to hire Berg after Mick Miller to a superintendent job in the Walla Walla School District.

Area churches plan Easter services

Area churches plan a variety of Easter services this weekend.
• Faith Lutheran Church at S.214 Weber Road will hold an Easter breakfast from 8:30-9:30 a.m. on Sunday along with an Easter egg hunt at 9:15 a.m. A worship service will be held at 10 a.m.
• Zion Lutheran Church at E220 Crawford will hold a 7 a.m. Easter sunrise service will be added to the normal 10 a.m. Sunday service schedule.
• The Open Door Congregational Church at N205 Main St. will hold an Easter Sunday sunrise service is planned at 6:30 a.m. followed by a breakfast at 8 a.m. and a worship service at 9:30 a.m.

Elk woman faces arson charge

A 24-year-old Elk woman faces first-degree arson charges following a house fire in the N37000 block of Elk-Chattaroy Road on March 27.
Spokane County Fire District No. 4 and Spokane County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched at around 1:30 p.m. to a suspicious fire at Elk-Chattaroy Road. Fire personnel had responded to the same residence the previous day to a suspicious mattress fire.
While en route to the residence, Deputy Jennifer Sutter received information that 24-year-old Amanda Cook possibly started the fire intentionally.

Homicide investigation yields body in Chattaroy

The Spokane County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes and Forensics units assisted Whitman County Sheriff’s Office with a homicide investigation at N28709 Schwartgen Road in Chattaroy.
Investigators spent the day looking for the body of 17-year-old Donavin Stapert, who was believed to have been killed earlier this month in Malden, Wash. They spent most of the morning collecting forensic evidence near a site of some freshly turned dirt and started digging this afternoon.

Driver seriously hurt in Blanchard Road crash

March 26, 2013

Excessive speed was blamed, in part, for a one-car accident on east Blanchard Road on Tuesday that left the driver in critical condition.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, the 23-year-old driver, whose name was not released, was traveling on Blanchard Road at around 1 a.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve and became airborne. The vehicle then struck a couple of pine trees prior to coming to rest.
The driver was transported to a local hospital.
Investigators determined speed and impairment were factors in the collision.
