Charles L. Scott, 71

June 5, 2013

Charles was born in Fort Lewis, Wash., to Clyde and Charlotte Scott on June 29, 1941. He passed away in his favorite chair at home.
Charles attended Rogers High School and after graduation joined the Navy. Upon returning from his service in the Navy, Charles obtained a position with the Western Fruit Express Railroad where he worked for 27 ½ years.

Elmer R. Johnson, 79

Elmer Roy Johnson, 79, a longtime resident of Milan/Chattaroy, passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2013.
He is the dear father and father-in-law of Jomn and Theresa Johnson of Nine Mile Falls, Marci Johnson and Curtis Jacobsen of Hamilton, Mont., and Lorna Johnson and Doug Barnes of Curlew, Wash. His sisters are Karen (Richard) Doty of Spokane Valley and Elaine Van Horne of Newman Lake. He enjoyed 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren
Roy’s dear wife, Janice Arlene Johnson, passed away in 2005.

Joyce L. Ransbottom, 87

Joyce LaVerne Ransbottom, 87, a longtime resident of Loon Lake, passed away on May 22, 2013, at Colville.
She is the mother and mother-in-law of Tim and Lonnie Ransbottom of Kettle Falls. Joyce has a nephew, Steve Everett, residing in Florida.
Her husband, William L. Ransbottom, passed away in 1992.
Born in 1925 in Sarasota, Fla., she served on the Loon Lake School Board and was a member of the Loon Lake Historical Society and the Loon Lake Ladies Guild.

Starbuck found guilty of murdering ex-wife

It took a Spokane County Superior Court jury less than a day to find Clay Starbuck guilty of murdering his ex-wife, Chanin, in her Deer Park home in December 2011.
Starbuck, who took the stand in his own defense on May 29, faces up to life in prison.
His defense team said they would appeal the verdict.
The jury, which heard closing arguments from both sides and final deliberation instructions on Monday, reached its decision late Tuesday evening.

DP School Board decides to go with Swett

After three days of interviews and weekend of deliberations and negotiations the Deer Park School Board selected Jon Swett as the new school superintendent on Monday.
Swett, who oversees the high schools at Spokane School District 81, currently lives in the Riverside School District but his three children attend the Deer Park schools.
Swett, who replaced Becky Berg, will assume the superintendent post on July 1.

Floyd T. Norris, 90

May 20, 2013

Floyd Thomas Norris, 90, a longtime resident of Springdale, passed away at his home on May 12, 2013. Floyd was born on April 30, 1923, in Valley, Wash., to Oscar and Florence (Evans) Norris.
Floyd graduated as valedictorian from Springdale High School in 1941. After graduation, he spent two years working for the railroad before joining the U.S. Army in 1943. Floyd served as a combat engineer in the South Pacific and Japan and completed his service in 1946.

Lynn Holcomb, 68

Lynn Holcomb, longtime Deer Park resident, has died at the age of 68.
He was born on Nov. 2, 1944 in Spokane to Elmer and Isabelle Holcomb, who farmed north of Deer Park. The family moved briefly to California before returning to live in Clayton. There, Lynn attended grade school.
He attended Deer Park High School before enlisting in the United States Army. He served from 1968 to 1974, including one tour in Germany and two in Vietnam. He served a further six years in the National Guard.
Lynn worked briefly in the mines at Wallace, Idaho, and in a veneer plant at Ford.

Donald M. Stapleton, 64

Donald Michael Stapleton, age 64, passed away from an unknown brain tumor surrounded by his adoring family on May 14, 2013.
Don was born the fourth of seven children on May 30, 1948, to Warren and Marjorie Stapleton in Spokane. He graduated from Riverside High school in 1968.
Don's family always came first. He would drop everything to help anyone in need. He loved riding his Honda Goldwing.
He worked for Lakeside Asphalt for over 35 years.

Kaye E. Roalson, 79

May 20, 2013

Kaye passed away peacefully on May 14, 2013, while surrounded by her loving family in her Pateros, Wash., home. The song “In the Garden” was being played by guitar and sung to her as she slipped gently into Jesus’ loving arms.
Kaye was raised in Coulee City, Wash., by her parents, the late Robert and Hilda Bise. Kaye also raised her own children in Coulee City.
Kaye ran the Reservoir Café and then was a clerk at the Coulee City Post Office.
In 1975, Kaye moved to the Deer Park area to be the postmaster at the Clayton Post Office.

Thieves strike GreenHouse's thrift store

Thieves broke into the GreenHouse Community Center thrift store at N31 Main St. in Deer Park early Thursday morning at took a small floor safe containing more than $250.
It appears the thieves, after disabling the outside security camera, forced open the back door and headed for the safe, which would have taken more than one person to carry.
They also ransacked a portion of the store but nothing else appeared to have been stolen.
The store opened for business at its normal hour on Thursday.
