Spokane County Fire District No. 4 voters have agreed to a 20-year bond plan that will upgrade some district facilities and equipment.
The $14 million measure was on its way to approval by a 4,516-2,422 margin in the Aug. 5 primary election. The 65 percent approval rating was easily above the 60 percent needed for passage.
Among the fire district bond issue plans is to improve the 30-year-old Station 41 in Deer Park that has outgrown its present space considerations and to upgrade a large portion of the fire districtâ€™s front line response apparatus.
UPDATED: Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, seeking her sixth term, easily beat back challenges from three other candidates in yesterdayâ€™s primary election.
McMorris Rodgers, a Republican, garnered 60,351 (51.74 percent) in the first day of election tabulations. Democrat Joseph Pakootas finished second in the primary with 33,643 votes.
The top two candidates in all primary elections advance to the November general election.
The other candidates were Independent Dave Wilson (13,157) and Republican Tom Horne (9,501).
Esther Pearl May, age 83, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2014, at Spokane Hospice House North.
She was born to George and Mary May on Aug. 2, 1930, at their home in Ada County, Idaho.
She is survived by her five children, Esther Stephenson, Debra Watkins, Kathleen Walker, Clifford Stoddart and Teresa Stoddart; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and five siblings.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at the Pine Crest Manor Community Hall, E204 â€śDâ€ť St. in Deer Park. A private family graveside service will follow at Peone Cemetery.
Gov. Jay Inslee announced today a new extension to the burn ban extension he ordered last week that includes a ban on most outdoor and agricultural burning for 20 counties east of the crest of the Cascades, including Spokane, Stevens and Pend Oreille counties.
The burn ban, which was scheduled to end on Aug. 8, is extended until noon on Aug. 15.

Deer Park came close but just missed out on topping the century mark today.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Deer Park reached 98 degrees at 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. (it registered 97 degrees at 3 p.m.) today.
The Weather Channel listed the cityâ€™s high temperature today at 99 degrees.
Intellicast.com, which tracks historical weather data for every zip code, reported Deer Parkâ€™s record high for July 29 is 99 degrees set in 2003.
Deer Park will have another chance to top 100 degrees tomorrow as the forecast calls for high temperature of 97 degrees.
Don Joe Sappington, age 81, born on March 28, 1933, in Texarkana, Texas, entered into rest on July 20, 2014, in Spokane Valley. Don was a resident of Loon Lake for 12 years.
He graduated from high school in Great Falls, Mont., in 1952. Don served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean Conflict earning the National Defense Service Ribbon.
Don worked on aircrafts in Texas doing fiberglass lay-up bonding and air tunnel testing. He also worked as a sawyer at a lumber company in Idaho.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing and building and flying model aircrafts.
