Trio of state fishing records fall

David Hickman of Richland has set a new state record for the largest tiger muskie caught in state waters, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has confirmed.
The 37.88-pound fish measured 50.38 inches in length and was caught in Curlew Lake in Ferry County on July 26 using a white spinner bait.
"Sometimes you can tell by the shape and width of the head that a fish is big," said Hickman. "I wasn't thinking about whether it was record-sized, I just kept thinking 'I hope my line doesn't break.'"

High school football practice underway

High school football teams across the state opened up practices today. The Deer Park Stags will open up their season on Sept. 5 at East Valley, while Riverside starts on the same night at Timberlake. The Springdale Chargers opener is Sept. 5 at home against Wilbur-Creston.

Frost places 38th at state golf tourney

Deer Park’s Catelyn Frost placed 38th at last week’s state Class 2A golf tournament at The Classic Golf Club in
Frost, the first Lady Stag to make the first round cut, shot a 103-111 over the par 72 course. Teammate Sierra Lewis did not qualify for the final round after shooting a 114 last Wednesday.
Fife’s Kendall Gray won the individual championship with a 79-80=159 showing over the two days.
Defending champion Bellingham won the team title with 98, easily outdistancing runner-up Hockinson’s 73 score.
Deer Park did not qualify anyone for the boys’ tournament.

Lady Stags win playoff opener

The Deer Park softball team, led by an 8-run second inning, advanced into the double-elimination round of the District VII tournament with an easy 11-1 win over the Pullman Greyhounds on Thursday.
The Lady Stags, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, found themselves trailing 1-0 as the Greyhounds took advantage of some early wildness by Deer Park pitcher Kylie Sweeney. Deer Park quickly tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Siera English.

Lady Rams earn NE-A softball tourney's No. 2 seed

The Riverside High School softball team clinched the upcoming District VII tournament’s second seed with a 6-3 win over the Medical Lake Cardinals on Saturday in the final game of the regular season.
Having lost the lost the first game of the doubleheader 6-4, Saturday’s second game set up a showdown where the winner would earn the second seed and a first round bye in the district tournament.
The Lady Rams (14-4) struck first with a pair of runs in the second inning, highlighted by RBI from Kyra Phillips and Kendra Aronson.

DP's Cartee earns three Riverside Invite medals

Deer Park’s Anna Cartee took home a trio of championships at Friday’s Riverside Twilight Invitational.
The junior won the 100 hurdles with a 15.84 performance and later captured the long jump title with a 15-foot, 8-5-inch effort and the triple jump championship at 35-10.75.
The triple jump effort set a new meet record, besting the old mark by more than an inch.
Helped by Cartee’s championships, the Lady Stags placed third in the final team standings, trailing champion Lakeside and Colfax.

Power laden Lady Stags crush Greyhounds

The Deer Park softball team, after spotting Pullman a pair of first inning runs, quickly regrouped to score a 10-2 Great Northern League win on Tuesday.
The Lady Stags quickly tied the game with two runs of their own in the first inning and took the lead for good in the third on a double by catcher Carlie Durgeloh and an RBI single by pitcher Kylie Sweeney.

DP's Joe Grable heading to NCU

Deer Park’s Joe Grable, who capped off his prep wrestling career with his second state Class 2A championship in February, has signed a letter of intent to wrestle at Northern Colorado University next season.
Grable joins Central Valley High School’s Colton Orrino in the NCU program in 2014-15.
Grable finished his senior season with a 37-2 overall record and a career record of 147-16, giving him the school record for victories.
