The Deer Park Stags, sparked by a trio of 3-pointers in the closing minutes of the first half, defeated the East Valley Knights 65-62 on Friday.
The win assured Deer Park (4-5 in the Great Northern League) a District VII tournament berth.
“That (the scoring spurt) was big for us,†said Stag head coach Ken Ryan.
Zach Mohr, Uconn Peone and Caleb Guske keyed the second quarter offensive blitz by each sinking 3-pointers.
‘We have to win the last 3 minutes,’ Ryan told his team late in the first half.
The East Valley Lady Knights, using a physical defensive presence and some timely fourth quarter free throw shooting, downed the Deer Park Lady Stags 48-40 on Friday.
The Lady Stags (6-3 in the Great Northern League), led by as many as 11 points in the first half, only to see the Lady Knights (5-3) hold them to only a Kimmie Brazington free throw in the third quarter. East Valley’s defensive effort allowed the Lady Knights to erase a seven-point halftime deficit and take a 33-32 lead going into the final quarter.
