August 30th
On Sept. 12, 2006, Daren LaFayette was working with a crew from Sharp-Line Industries on Flowery Trail Road near Chewelah. In a matter of seconds, the 19-year-old made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the safety of his fellow workers.
Now, a half a decade later, the Riverside Baseball Boosters made sure LaFayette’s sacrifice will always be remembered.
The Riverside School Board last week gave the OK to rename the baseball field in LaFayette’s name.
August 16th
Deer Park football fans will get a look at the new high school track although the peek may not happen at the Stags’ Sept. 9 season football opener.
Steve Howard, the school district’s maintenance supervisor, does not expect the work to be completed until the end of September or early October.
Beynon Atlas, a Tarkett Sports Co., headquartered in Portland, Ore., started work on the new track this summer. The company has removed the existing track, which was laid in 1980 (the year the high school was built) and resurfaced in 1998.
August 11th
Starting on Sept. 1, the base cost of most Washington hunting and fishing licenses will increase. It is the first general recreational license fee increase in more than a decade.
The 2011 Legislature approved the new fees to help meet rising costs and a shortfall in revenue for managing hunting, fishing and the fish and wildlife populations that are the focus of those activities.
July 26th
Washington’s fifth gray wolf pack has been confirmed in Stevens County.
Earlier this month, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) biologists caught, marked with an ear tag and released a 2-month-old wolf pup from the pack. Biologists have since been trying to capture one of the pack’s breeding adult wolves to radio-collar it for monitoring. The effort to document the pack began after local ranchers reported observing three wolf pups and hearing howling in late June.
July 20th
Deer Park’s 13-year-old Colton Youngblood-Munsen is taking part in the National Pony Club Festival and Championships this week in Lexington, Ky.
Youngblood-Munsen, son of Jenny Youngblood of Deer Park, earned a spot in the national event with a win at the Stanton Farm Horse Trials last September in Deary, Idaho.
He will be competing in Kentucky with longtime companion Pistol Pete, a grey 13.1-hand Welsh pony cross. They won the Inavale Farm Horse Trials last month in the final tune-up before heading to Kentucky.
July 6th
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will host public meetings July 13-14 to discuss proposed treatments to improve trout broodstock production and trout fishing at Kings Lake in Pend Oreille County.
Public meetings to discuss the rehabilitation proposal are scheduled from 7-9 p.m. on:
• July 13 at the Create Art Center, W900 Fourth St., Newport.
• July 14 at the WDFW’s Eastern Region office, N2315 Discovery Place, Spokane Valley.
June 21st
Peyton Rose is heading back to Gallup, N.M., only this time the Deer Park teenager is bringing a teammate.
Rose, a freshman-to-be at Deer Park High School, qualified as a barrel racer at the Wrangler Junior High School National Finals Rodeo for the second straight year. She will also team up with fellow DPHS eighth grader Cole White in the ribbon roping competition.
The rodeo finals run from June 26-July 2 in Gallup.
Rose and White qualified for the national rodeo after placing the top four in their events at a series of rodeos last fall and this spring.
June 15th
Like most high school football teams in the state, the Deer Park Stags are not waiting until mid-August to get ready for the 2011 season.
The Stags are spending the current week finishing up their NFL-like organized training activities (more commonly known as summer camp) before heading to a four-day team camp later this month at Eastern Washington University.
The Stags OTA has brought out 88 football players, including 34 eighth graders who will make up the bulk of the freshman team this fall. About two dozen of the campers suited up for varsity action last season.
June 9th
Mary Walker boys basketball assistant coach Dave Howard has been promoted to head coach following the recent resignation of Dwayne Watts.
Howard, a 1977 Deer Park High School graduate, has served as assistant basketball coach for the past six years. He is also an assistant football coach.
Watts was 49-43 during his recent four-year tour as head coach with the Chargers. He led the Chargers to the state tournament in 1989 during his first head coaching stint at the school.
• The second annual Chargers Hoops Golf Tournament will be 1:30 p.m. on July 23 at the Deer Park Golf Course.

Springdale’s Kendall Peone, Rodney Abrahamson and Connor Parker, who helped guide the Chargers to a regional berth were named to the All-Northeast 2B League baseball team in voting by conference coaches.
Peone was named to the first team along with league most valuable player J.J. Robinson, Brandon Heiser, Tyler McNannay and Alex Teade, all of Colfax; Ross Collins and Jacob Schmach, both of Liberty; Erik Muelheims of St. George’s; Daniel Holland of Northwest Christian; Traven Smith of Lind-Ritzville-Sprague and Ron Wilke of Davenport.
