The Cheney Blackhawks, the last unbeaten volleyball team in the Great Northern League, defeated Deer Park 25-15, 25-22, 25-21 on Thursday.
In each game, the teams played even at the start only to have the Blackhawks surge to a commanding lead.
In the first game, a 5-5 deadlock quickly became a 16-5 lead behind the serving of Cheney’s Sami Sheffels.

The Riverside Rams, who were pushed around for most of the game, shoved back at the most opportune time on Friday.
The Rams, who saw Lakeside run 49 plays in the first three quarters (as compared to 29 of their own), responded with a pair of fourth quarter touchdown to edge the Eagles 14-10 in Northeast A League action.
The win improved the Rams’ NE-A record to 1-1 and 2-2 overall. It was the NE-A opener for the Eagles (1-3).
“We stopped them when we needed to,” said Riverside interim head coach Mark Vannatter. “We made plays.”

The Springdale Chargers couldn’t wait for their second football game this season.
The Chargers, who were routed by Tekoa-Oaksdale in their season opener two weeks ago, scored the first time they touched the ball, a 58-yard punt return by Shane O’Malley in a 48-0 win over Liberty (0-3) on Friday.
Unfortunately, O’Malley’s punt return was called back by a clipping penalty. It did not matter, since Mitch Peone legally scored a 45-yard run two plays later and the Chargers were in control the rest of the way.

Deer Park’s special teams lived up to its name in the Stags’ 37-19 win over Lakeside on Friday.
The unit was indeed special in contributing a kickoff return for a touchdown and a fumble recovery of a Lakeside kickoff return in the first half as well as bottling up the Lakeside attack in the second half. The Eagles (0-2) average start after Stag kickoffs in the second half was their own 16-yard line.
“It definitely controlled the field possession in the second half,” said Stag head coach Keith Stamps, who saw his team improve to 2-0 this fall.

The Deer Park Lady Stags buried their Riverside counterparts 12-1 on Tuesday in the season opener for both schools.
The got the goal-scoring avalanche started at the 13-minute mark when Ashton Martinson beat Riverside goalkeeper Brittany Hoog. It was the first of four goals Martinson scored in the first half.
The Lady Rams’ Ashley Uhlenkott scored Riverside’s lone goal at the 32-minute mark. The Lady Stags responded with three more goals before intermission.
Leading 8-1 at halftime, the Lady Stag coaching staff used the reserves for the majority of the second half.

The Deer Park Stags rolled up 398 yards of total offense in their season opener on Friday but none were as important as the final 6 of them.
Wide receiver Caleb Guske covered those final precious 18 feet when he hauled in a touchdown pass from Colton Mead with 25 seconds remaining to secure a 37-33 win over Chewelah. It was Mead’s fourth touchdown pass of the game.
“I meant to get him the ball,” said Mead on the Stags’ final offensive play of the game. “He’s a good basketball player and he can leap.”
Mead finished 19 of 28 for 270 yards.
