The Deer Park boys basketball team, using a 8-3 run to close out the game, defeated the Chewelah Cougars 63-56 on Thursday in the season opener for both schools.
The Cougars, who trailed by as many as 18 points in the first half, trimmed the Deer Park lead to 55-53 on a basket by Brandon Smith with 2 minutes to play. The Stags responded with free throws by Reese Ferguson and Uconn Peone sandwich between a jumper by Zach Mohr to extend the margin to 60-53 with less than a minute to play.
The Deer Park girls basketball team, paced by four players in double figures, easily dispatched the Chewelah Cougars 61-32 on Thursday in the season opener for both schools.
The Lady Stags wasted little time taking control of the game, building a 10-2 lead in the first couple of minutes. The margin grew to 28-8 midway through the second quarter on Alison Ruygrokâ€™s second three-pointer of the game. A Kimmie Brazington put-back gave the Lady Stags a 44-18 lead just before halftime.
The Deer Park volleyball team, coming off its best season in almost a decade, had one player earn postseason honors in voting by conference coaches.
Middle hitter Kimmi Brazington was selected to the second team.
Named to the first team were outside hitter Jaime Weisner and KC McConnell, both of Clarkston; outside hitter Sequoia Lofton, middle blocker Latasha Lofton and setter Aaliyah Ashley-Meek, all of West Valley; and libario April Oviatt and outside hitter Brittany Harvey, both of Pullman.
