Reserve deputy finds 32-year-old stolen revolver

A Stevens County Reserve Deputy contacted a Spokane County Sheriff’s Office detective last week to let him know he had located a gun on Craigslist that he was interested in buying
After checking the serial number on the gun being sold at Medical Lake, it was determined the Smith & Wesson .38 caliber revolver had been stolen in Tacoma in 1982.

Lake Spokane study planned at Suncrest

Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey will collect groundwater and aquatic plant samples near the Suncrest community for a study on excess nutrients in Lake Spokane.
USGS will begin sampling in August.
Too many nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus in the Spokane River and Lake Spokane cause depletion of dissolved oxygen that fish and other aquatic life need to survive. Excess nutrients can also cause toxic algae blooms that are harmful to human health.

Fire crews battle large Clayton hay fire

Fire crews spent Wednesday afternoon trying to contain a large semi-truck hay fire at Lazy L Farm Service and Supply at 4513 Bellstar Road in Clayton.
Fire crews from Stevens County Fire District 1’s Station 1 in Clayton and Spokane County Fire District No. 4’s Stations 41 (Deer Park), Station 42 (Chattaroy) and Station 46 (Riverside) to the scene. Chewelah Rural Ambulance was also dispatched as a precautionary measure.
Stevens County Sheriff’s deputies were also needed to stem the sudden amount of traffic on Bellstar Road.

DP Rotary Club finishing up Mix Park project

The Deer Park Rotary Club with the help of volunteers has been busy assembling playground equipment at the southwest corner of Mix Park.
The club has been helped in the project by the city’s maintenance crew and Toner’s Sand and Gravel, which poured the concrete around the play area.
Scott Stevens of Deer Park Plumbing has served as the construction boss as the club assembled the equipment.
The final step in the project will occur 10 a.m.-noon on Saturday as the club seeks community volunteers to help spread the bark-like material within the play area.
A potluck luncheon will follow.

Chattaroy man killed in house fire

June 19, 2014

Illegal fireworks are believed to be the cause of a house fire in Chattaroy that killed one man on Wednesday night.
Crews from Spokane County Fire District No. 4 responded to the manufactured home fire on E4900 Chattaroy Road after Sheriff’s deputies noticed smoke coming out of the structure.
The name of the deceased is being withheld until notification of next of kin.

Sheriff's Department warns of new motorcycle law

Earlier this month, Senate Bill 5141 went into effect changing rules governing motorcyclists on public roadways.
The new law states, in part, that the operator of a street legal motorcycle approaching and intersection, including a left turn intersection, that is controlled by a triggered traffic control signal using a vehicle detection device that is inoperative due to the size of the street legal motorcycle, shall come to a full and complete stop at the intersection.

'Click-or-Ticket yields citations

Extra law enforcement patrolling Spokane, Whitman, Pend Oreille and Ferry County roads between May 19-June 1 wrote 286 seatbelt infractions were written, in addition to 70 cell phone/texting tickets.
Last year officers "Click-it-or-Ticket" patrols wrote 297 seat belt infractions and 101 cell phone/texting violations.
In addition, five DUIs, one felony and three misdemeanor warrant arrests, 100 speeding violations, 15 child passenger safety infractions as well as 77 uninsured motorists and 43 suspended/revoked license violations were issued this year.
