Starbuck receives life prison term

Clay Starbuck’s fate was sealed on June 4. Spokane County Superior Court Judge Gregory Sypolt made it official on Thursday.
Starbuck was convicted last month of premeditated first-degree murder with aggravating circumstances in the killing of his ex-wife, Chanin, in her Deer Park home in December 2011. Under state sentencing guidelines, Starbuck was required to receive a life sentence with no chance of parole for his crime. In addition, he also received a 12-month sentence for his conviction of violating human remains.

Second victim dies in Chattaroy mobile home fire

Updated July 22:
A Chattaroy couple were killed following a mobile home explosion and fire on Wednesday evening.
Investigators continue to center their investigation on the fire being deliberately set as part of a domestic dispute.
Mike Asselin, 51, who passed away on Friday, and his wife, Sheila, had been separated for the past couple of months. Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that Asselin had disconnected one of the mobile home gas tanks and then set a match to the escaping gas.

K-9 unit aids in arrest of Elk fugitive

Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies received information that 49-year-old Robert S. McDonnell might be staying at a residence in the 14900 block of East Blanchard Road in Elk and might have an active warrant for his arrest.
After checking McDonnell’s name, it was found there was a confirmed Department of Corrections felony warrant for an escape community custody charge.
When deputies arrived at the location on July 3, they found the door of a travel trailer wide open and a lighter, cigarette rolling papers and tobacco on the ground nearby.

Concert, fireworks planned for the Fourth

The annual “As American As Apple Pie” concert will be held at 7 p.m. on July 4 in the parking lot of the Deer Park First Baptist Church, E1205 Crawford Ave.
The concert will feature performances from the Deer Park Orchestra and Chorus along with guest soloists James Hicks from Spokane and Eric Walsh of Spokane Valley.
The audience, who will be treated to free apple pie and ice cream before the concert, should bring their own lawn chairs and bottled water.

Fire danger increases in Spokane County

The fire danger on Department of Natural Resources protected lands in Spokane and Lincoln counties and Stevens County Fire Districts 1 and 2 has been increased to “high.”
In Pend Oreille County the fire danger has been increased to “moderate.”
A statewide burn ban on all DNR protected land will remain in effect until Sept. 30.

Starbuck sentencing delayed

Deer Park’s Clay Starbuck will have to wait a few more weeks to learn his fate in Spokane County Superior Court.
Starbuck, facing life in prison after being convicted last month for the first-degree murder of his ex-wife, Chanin, was scheduled to be sentenced on June 27. The sentencing date has been moved to 1:30 p.m. on July 18.
Since his conviction, Starbuck and his family continues to proclaim his innocence in the December 2011 killing to various Spokane area media outlets.

Sheriff's Department seeks info on log splitter theft

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Department is seeking information on the person responsible for the theft of a $1,100 log splitter from the Big R parking lot at N15228 Newport Highway, Colbert.
The Big R store manager reported the theft on June 10.
In surveillance photos, the suspect can be seen taking the log splitter and placing it in an orange 1990's Chevrolet-style truck.
Spokane County Sheriff's Detective Mark Newton is asking for any assistance in identifying the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to contact Newton at 477-2683.

Deer Park School Board changes course, hires Hanson as superintendent

In a surprising move, the Deer Park School Board has decided to go with Curriculum Director Travis Hanson as its new superintendent.
Hanson will replace Becky Berg on July 1.
The school board had offered the job to Spokane School District 81's Executive Director of Secondary School's Jon Swett last month, but could not come to a contract agreement.

Starbuck found guilty of murdering ex-wife

It took a Spokane County Superior Court jury less than a day to find Clay Starbuck guilty of murdering his ex-wife, Chanin, in her Deer Park home in December 2011.
Starbuck, who took the stand in his own defense on May 29, faces up to life in prison.
His defense team said they would appeal the verdict.
The jury, which heard closing arguments from both sides and final deliberation instructions on Monday, reached its decision late Tuesday evening.

DP School Board decides to go with Swett

After three days of interviews and weekend of deliberations and negotiations the Deer Park School Board selected Jon Swett as the new school superintendent on Monday.
Swett, who oversees the high schools at Spokane School District 81, currently lives in the Riverside School District but his three children attend the Deer Park schools.
Swett, who replaced Becky Berg, will assume the superintendent post on July 1.
