Bioenergy plant to open in Springdale

A Springdale lumber mill that lay dormant for five years has a new lease on life and a new job description.
The Borgford BioEnergy Project purchased the defunct Springdale Lumber Co. in October 2009. The mill, which had shutdown almost five years earlier, contained most of the equipment for a specialty beam sawmill. The company decided to expand the operation to include a bio-energy park.

Voters reject library district levy lid lift request; Whittle wins

Once again, Stevens County voters rejected a plan to raise the Stevens County Library District’s levy rate to 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation.
In preliminary primary election results, voters overwhelmingly rejected the plan 5,332-3,635. A simple majority of yes votes was needed for passage.
Library district officials had hoped that the restored levy rate would augment the shrinking annual operating budget.
• In the only other primary election race, Deer Park School Board incumbent Jeff Whittle easily outpolled his two challenger.

Elk man nabbed with stolen pickup truck

Motor vehicle violations led to the arrest of a 40-year-old Elk man on Aug. 14 for possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Shover was patrolling the area of 37000 North Newport Highway about noon when he spotted a Toyota pickup that had an obscured license plate, broken windshield and no mud flaps. He stopped the truck and identified the driver as James E. White.

DP Airport construction project back on track

The Deer Park Airport’s $2.33 million “ramp rehabilitation” project received a new lease on life when the U.S. Senate on Friday approved legislation ending the two-week-old Federal Aviation Administration partial shutdown.
The ramp rehab project, which included new runway edge and beacon lighting and a new fuel disbursement system, was put on hold when the Senate refused to pass a House-approved bill before going on a month-long summer break.
The city had hired Kilgore Construction Co. in July with a 90-day window to complete the project.

Elk accident sends three to the hospital

A 32-year-old Elk man faces possible vehicular assault charges following a two-car accident on Elk-Milan Road on Saturday afternoon.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, Tony Blake of Elk was traveling northbound on Milan-Elk Rd when he crossed over the centerline with his 1978 GMC pickup truck and struck a 2005 Mazda MP driven by Crystal Stokes, 69.

Youth arrested for a string of suspicious fires

Fire investigators have apprehended a juvenile teenage suspect in a string of recent area fires. The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Spokane County Fire District 4 collaborated in the investigation into approximately nine suspicious wildfires last week.
Spokane County Fire District No. 4 and DNR crews responded at 7:43 p.m. to two wildfires near Mountainside Middle School on Day-Mt. Spokane Road on July 23. The fires were determined to be suspicious in nature by fire scene investigators.

Settlers enjoys another successful run

Sunny skies and large crowds were the perfect combination to help partake in the 90th Tri-County Settlers Association celebration.
The festivities featured a morning parade with more than 90 entries and an afternoon picnic in Mix Park that included kids games, a petting zoo and musical entertainment.
The Spokane Lilac Festival float took the parade’s top prize, the sweepstakes award. The Ritzville Community Float won the mayor’s award and Real Estate Marketplace’s Jim Palmer Sr. and Jr. won the judges’ award.

Elk man found with stolen car

Spokane Valley police officers arrested a 20-year-old Elk man on July 20 after they found him seated in a stolen Honda Civic.
Mike McNees and other officers responded to the River Rock Apartments at E12700 Shannon about 10:30 a.m. after a person reported a suspicious male ducking down inside the parked Honda and smoking something.
McNees contacted the occupant who identified himself as Christopher L. Dahlman. Sheriff’s dispatch advised McNees that the plate on the back of the Honda was stolen, and when he checked the car’s identification number, learned it was stolen as well.

World War II vet takes Honor Flight

Deer Park’s Jack Woods was among 35 area World War II veterans who were part of the Inland Northwest Honor Flight that left Spokane International Airport on Friday to see the memorial built in their honor in Washington, D.C.
The 85-year-old Woods, who enlisted in the Navy in 1943, served in the South Pacific during World War II aboard the USS Cassin Young (DD-793), which withstood several kamikaze attacks.
Woods, who later worked at Kaiser-Mead, has lived in Deer Park since 1968.

Father-son killed in Cascades plane crash

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration continue to investigate the crash of a single-engine airplane that took off from Elk on Friday evening and crashed in rugged terrain in the Cascade Mountains, killing two people aboard according to Washington State Department of Transportation officials.
The pair, Matthew K. Annis, 45, and his 8-year-old son, Matthew Reilly Annis, were headed to the annual Arlington Fly-In.
