The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, which has a person of interest in the Chanin Starbuck homicide investigation, continues to interview witnesses and follow up leads developed from those interviews. They are also reviewing digital evidence taken from the crime scene.
Starbuck’s body was discovered in her Deer Park home on Dec. 3 after neighbors became concerned about the accumulation of mail in front of her house.
The Spokane Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Starbuck was strangled a few days earlier.

For the second time in less than a month, an armed robber struck The Medicine Shoppe at E11 "H" Street in Deer Park.
The latest incident occurred at about 4 p.m. Friday by a man who handed employees a note demanding pain medication. The suspect vaguely resembled the man who robbed the same business on Dec. 5.
In the Dec. 29 robbery, the suspect handed employees a note and indicated he was armed with a gun, although no firearm was displayed.
December 29th
Emergency crews from Spokane County Fire District No. 4 and Deer Park Ambulance spent a part of Thursday morning extricating a driver following a one-vehicle accident on Monroe Road.
The driver of the Dodge pickup, whose name was not immediately released, went off the roadway, traveled a short distance and struck a tree. When emergency crews arrived at around 11:15 a.m., they found the truck on its side.
Fire crews needed to cut off the top of the pickup to free the driver who was transported to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers’ district may get a little smaller, according to the latest proposal submitted by the Washington Redistricting Commission on Dec. 28.
The commission is charged with carving up the state into 10 Congressional districts, one more district than the last redistricting effort 10 years ago.
To make room for the new district, which will sit mostly in Thurston and Pierce counties under the latest plan, the other districts underwent geographical reconfigurations to ensure each one had approximately 672,450 residents.

Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies are trying to determine the cause of a one-vehicle accident on Dec. 25 that took the life of Bradley J. Updegrove, 45-year-old Deer Park man.
The fatal crash occurred around 9 p.m. at the north 27800 block of Cedar Road (just south of Owens Road). A motorist driving by the area found a 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche crashed against a tree. Deputies found the driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, without a pulse. Shortly after medics arrived on the scene and pronounced him dead.

Area churches will celebrate the holidays with various Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services.
The Deer Park Open Door Congregational Church at N205 Main St. will hold Christmas Eve services at 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. along with its traditional 9:30 a.m. Sunday service.
St. Mary’s Presentation Catholic Church at E602 Sixth St. will hold Christmas masses at 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Dec. 24 and 9 a.m. on Christmas Day.

The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission has approved an Avista Corp. rate hike request, just not in the amount the company requested.
The three-member commission agreed to let Avista collect an additional $23.7 million in electric and natural gas revenues starting on Jan. 1. The company had requested an additional $44.5 million when it made its rate hike application last spring.

Deer Park and Riverside will not be going anywhere when it comes to Washington Interscholastic Activities Association sports classifications for the 2012-13 school year.
In a WIAA meeting in Renton last week to look at preliminary classifications for the upcoming two school years, Deer Park will remain a Class 2A (Great Northern League) school will Riverside will remain in the Class 1A (Northeast A League) ranks.

Spokane County Sheriff's Department major crimes detectives continue to investigate the suspicious death of Deer Park’s Chanin D. Starbuck.
Detectives are asking for the public’s assistance and would like to talk to anyone who may have had contact with Starbuck over the past 30-plus days.
Starbuck’s body was discovered by deputies while conducting a welfare check at her home in the 500 block of north Reiper Ave., about 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 3. A caller to 911 reported seeing uncollected mail and packages at the home and requested the welfare check.
