SCRAPS investigating animal abuse case

Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Services (SCRAPS) continues to investigate an animal cruelty complaint on property on the outskirts of Deer Park last week.
SCRAPS investigators, who did not disclose the address of the farm, seized a horse, two sheep and a pig. The animals were taken to a veterinarian for treatment.

Underage tobacco sales still on the rise

The number of retailers in Washington illegally selling tobacco to minors is high for the second year in a row.
An annual report that tracks illegal sales shows about 15 percent of tobacco retailers sold tobacco to minors in 2013 — that’s about the same as it was in 2012. As recently as 2009 the rate was much lower, at about 9 percent.

Hughes chosen Miss Deer Park

Kelli Hughes, no stranger to royalty duties, was crowned the 60th Miss Deer Park in ceremonies in Deer Park High School’s Ken Fisher Performing Arts Center on Saturday evening.
In addition to her latest honor, Hughes, daughter of Josh Hughes and Teresa and Ryan Polensky, was the 2011 Clayton Fair Queen.
Joanna Goodner, daughter of Tony and Dawn Goodner, and Kelcie Lenz, daughter of Jeff and Cindy Lenz, were chosen this year’s princesses. The princess title carries a $675 scholarship.

K-9 helps capture Deer Park suspect

Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and K-9 Deacon were able to locate a suspect who had violated a domestic violence protecting order and fled a Deer Park residence during the late hours on March 11.
The incident began when Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Dutton responded to a possible domestic dispute in the 400 block of South Evergreen Court in Deer Park around 9:30 p.m. Several deputies responded to the area to help locate the suspect who reportedly left the scene on foot prior to their arrival.

Deer Park's Yokes is a "lucky" store

Yoke’s Fresh Market in Deer Park was among the 10 “Luckiest Stores” in Eastern Washington, according to the Washington State Lottery office.
A Lucky Store is any retail locations that sold a winning ticket worth $1,000 or more in the previous year.
The Deer Park Yoke’s store was tied for third in Eastern Washington with six lucky tickets sold over the past year.
Rosauer’s Super Market at West Third Avenue in Spokane is the “Luckiest Store” in Eastern Washington with 10 big wins in 2013, up from seven big wins in 2012.

Elk medical marijuana dispensary robbed

A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of persons involved in a theft of a medical marijuana dispensary in Elk.
Employees at JD’s Garden at N39817 Newport Highway determined the burglary took place sometime late on March 2 or early on March 3. More than 20 ounces of marijuana, two custom marijuana pipes and 38 THC infused chocolate bars were stolen.

Mary Walker School bus in accident

March 5, 2014

Mary Walker School District officials are still sorting out events surrounding a bus crash today that sent 6-8 students to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.
The bus was traveling on Cemetery Road near State Highway 231 when it left the roadway and landed on its side.
Law enforcement officials said the road was covered by a sheet of ice.
The students were able to escape from the bus by the time emergency crews arrived. The uninjured students were taken to school on another bus.

Gun tied to DP murder positively identified

A gun found by school children on Jan. 23 has been confirmed by the Washington State Crime Lab as the weapon used to kill Harry “Ed” Giesbrecht, 53, at his Deer Park home on Jan. 4.
Richard Klepacki, 62, was arrested for Giesbrecht’s murder shortly after the shooting.
A Deer Park Elementary School-aged student found the gun next to the road while on the way to the school bus stop. The child picked up the gun, brought it to the bus stop and threw it on the ground. A parent waiting at the bus stop noticed the gun and retrieved it. The weapon was loaded.

Deer Park woman wins Lotto "jackpot"

A Deer Park woman recently hit the jackpot while playing the Washington Lottery’s “Hit 5.”
The lucky winner, who asked Lottery officials not to release her name, visited the Fred Meyer store on N12120 Division on Feb. 14 and decided to check her Hit 5 ticket.
Thinking that she had won, she had her grandson check to ensure she did in fact have a winning ticket.
She shared, “this is just unbelievable!”

Bad news: Pete sees his shadow
