Ellen L. Baker, 89

November 13, 2013

Ellen L. (Pratt, Hutchinson) Baker, age 89 was born on Nov. 18, 1923, to Arthur G. and Mary A. Pratt at the family homestead in the shadow of White Bluff, west of Spokane. She died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, evening at Franklin Hills Nursing Home of heart and lung failure.
She spent her childhood on the family farm with her beloved horses and helping her dad. She married Roy M. Hutchinson Sr. in October 1941. They spent their time at various jobs and part-time farming and playing with their horses. Roy died in 1973.

Warren H. Balch, 83

Warren Herbert Balch, 83, was born April 30, 1930 in Ticonderoga, N.Y., and died on Sept. 28, 2013 at the Spokane Veterans’ Administration Hospital.
He is survived by one daughter, Terra J. Pring; two grandchildren; and a sister, Beverly Ray of Poultney, Vt.
Warren served in the U.S. Navy from July 25, 1947, to Dec. 28, 1951, and the U.S. Air Force from Dec. 5, 1955 to Nov. 11, 1959.
He will be missed!

WSP trooper hurt in U.S. 395 accident

A Washington State Patrol trooper was injured in a two-car accident on U.S. Highway 395 at around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday near Larsen Beach Road near Loon Lake.
According to the WSP report, the trooper was southbound on the highway when he tried to make a U-turn to chase down a northbound vehicle. During his turn, he was rear-ended by another southbound car.
The trooper, whose name was not released, was transported to a Spokane hospital with neck pain. The driver of the other car was not hurt while his passenger was transported by hospital with unspecified injuries.

Dansel still leads in state senate race

The grass roots state senate campaign waged by Ferry County Commissioner Brian Dansel still leads incumbent 7th District Sen. John Smith 13,369-11,698 after two days of voting.
Dansel, who was buried by Smith, in campaign fund-raising and spending, won in voting in only two of the five counties that make up the 7th District. In Stevens County, he holds a 4,183-3070 margin. He also won Ferry County 1,476-546.

Helen Wolf, 100

Helen (Hopp) Wolf died peacefully in her sleep at her home on Nov. 1, 2013.
Helen was born July 27, 1913 in Odessa, Wash., to Conrad and Ann Margaret Hopp who had immigrated to America earlier that year. Helen grew up on a farm near Lamona, Wash., and attended the two-room Lamona School through eighth grade. She graduated from Odessa High School in 1932 and married Leo Wolf that fall. They shared 49 wonderful years together until Leo passed away in 1982.

Earl Howard Sr., 73

Earl Howard Sr. a longtime resident of the Valley, Wash., area, passed away on Oct. 22, 2013, in Spokane at the age of 73.
Earl was born on March 19, 1940 in Mouise, Ky., the son of Wilse and Syntha (Scotchfield) Howard. Earl lived with his family in Indiana where he attended school and completed the eighth grade. At the age of 16 he began a new journey in life when he decided to hitchhike to Washington and arrived and settled in the Spokane area.

Joyce M. Larson, 84

Joyce M. Larson, age 84, peacefully went to be with our Lord on Oct. 25, 2013. She was the loving devoted wife to Larry and mother to Michael, who preceded her in 1992.
Survived by one sister. LouAnne Dennison of Nooksak, Wash.; a daughter, Michelle Gemmill (Gregg Gemmill) of Deer Lake; four grandchildren, Brian Larson of Bayview Idaho, Rachel and Toby Jeffrey of Vancouver Wash., Laura Gemmill of Cheney, and Jason Gemmill of Deer Park; numerous great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Glenn J. Perrins, 68

Glenn James Perrins, 68, passed away on Oct. 18, 2013, at Moses Lake, Wash., after a four-year battle with cancer. He lived a life of faith, love and commitment and was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing.
Glenn was born on Nov. 15, 1944, to the late Melvin Samuel Perrins and Sadie Ressa Lounsbury in Spokane. He was raised in Deer Park where he was active in band, football, baseball, track and basketball.

Two arrested after U.S. 395 car chase

A police chase that started in Spokane Valley, traveled along U.S. Highway 395 near Deer Park and ended near the Wandermere Bridge with the arrest of two men.
Spokane Valley Sheriff's Deputies David Lawhorn and Lamont Petersen responded to a suspicious vehicle call at E6623 Trent Ave. Both deputies approached the suspicious vehicle on a dead-end road. When the driver of the vehicle saw the deputies, he accelerated towards Petersen's marked patrol vehicle at a high rate of speed with no lights on.

Lady Stags clinch playoff berth with West Valley sweep

The Deer Park volleyball team clinched a District VII tournament berth with a 25-7, 25-15, 25-19 win over West Valley on Tuesday.
The win boosted the Lady Stags’ Great Northern League record to 3-7 and eliminated the winless Eagles from any postseason action.
“They gave us a real good match,” said Deer Park head coach Jack Wood on the Eagles’ effort.
