Stags break into the state football rankings

October 27, 2011

The Deer Park football team continues to reach unprecedented heights this season.
The 7-1 Stags are ranked 10th with North Kitsap and Swin the latest Washington media pool for Class 2A schools. It is the first time the Stags have ever been ranked in the football poll.
Lynden, the only undefeated Class 2A team in the state is ranked No. 1 followed by defending champion Tumwater. Fellow Great Northern League school, Cheney, is ranked ninth.

Thieves strike GreenHouse Community Center

Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a burglary at the GreenHouse Community Center at W112 First St. in the early morning hours of Oct. 25.
It appeared that the perpetrators tried to pry off the lock on the outside door leading to Office Manager Roxie Champagne’s office. Once that failed they broke the door window and climbed inside.

After 34 years, Stags defeat Bantams

The Deer Park football team can party likes its 1977.
The Stags finally ended 34 years of frustration (15 games) by defeating the Clarkston Bantams 27-25 on Friday.
The win finished the Stags’ Great Northern League season with a 4-1 mark (7-1 overall) and assures them a home playoff game on Nov. 8, 11 or 12. The Bantams fell to 2-3,
“The kids worked hard tonight,” said Stag head coach Keith Stamps, “nothing came easy.”

Roscoe W. Jones, 85

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. on Oct. 26 at Lauer Funeral Home, Deer Park, with the Rev. Rick McCombs officiating, for former Clayton resident Roscoe W. Jones, 85, who passed away on Oct. 21.
Born in 1925 in Lexington, Neb., he attended school in Clayton before serving in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a longtime employee at Kaiser-Mead, working as a rodding room operator. He was currently living in Spokane Valley.
Mr. Jones was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Clayton Grange, Eagles Aerie No. 2 in Spokane and United Steelworkers of America Local No. 329.

Clarkston volleyball overpowers Deer Park

The Clarkston Bantams, relying on strong net play, swept Deer Park 25-15, 25-15, 25-18 in the Lady Stags’ 2011 home finale on Thursday.
The win improved Clarkston’s Great Northern League record to 8-3, while Deer Park fell to 4-7.
In the first game, the Bantams jumped out to a 10-6 lead. A Jamie Weisner kill stretched Clarkston’s lead to 14-7. A kill by the Lady Stags’ Ciera Sitton trimmed the lead to 21-13 but the Bantams rolled the rest of the way.

Is the swimming pool on city's budget chopping block?

The Deer Park City Council has not ruled out closing the swimming pool as a way of saving money next year.
The facility, faced with dwindling public use, lost $70,000 last year. The city will have to install a handicapped lip at the pool next year.
Councilman Steve Hughes said it did not make much sense to operate the swimming pool, which was built more than 60 years ago, when it only attracts 30-35 children a day during the summer.
The city only received about $5,000 in usage fees last year.

James H. Berger, 91

A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. on Oct. 21, followed by a funeral mass at 11 a.m. on Oct. 22, both at St. Mary’s Presentation Catholic Church, Deer Park, E602 Sixth St., for longtime Loon Lake resident James H. “Jim” Berger, 91, who passed away on Oct. 18.
Mr. Berger was a former Stevens County Public Utility District No. 1 commissioner and Woodland Cemetery manager.
Lauer Funeral Home, Deer Park, will be in charge of arrangements.

Sgt. Charles Henry

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Oct. 22 at the Springdale Community Church, for former Springdale resident Marine Corps Sgt. Charles Henry, 27, who passed away on Oct. 13 in Jacksonville, N.C.
Born on Nov. 20, 1984, in Enid, Okla., to Fredrick and Linda Henry, he graduated from Mary Walker High, where he met his wrestling coach and mentor, Kyle Dodge. It was in high school where he met his wife-to-be, Heaven Spiry. They were married on Dec. 11, 2004, at the Springdale Community Church by the Rev. Sonny Clemmer.

DP's Perez is enjoying her senior season

Let the fun times begin!
Alisha Perez, a four-year member of the Deer Park volleyball team, has seen her fair share of in her first three years. While not competing for a Great Northern League championship this fall, the Lady Stags have beaten teams that never gave them a second thought in year’s past.
“At first, it was shocking,” said Perez on this year’s success, “but after a while yeah!”
Among those who fell this year was home-standing Cheney on Saturday.
The 5-foot-9 Perez, one of Deer Park’s main weapons at the net, said the Lady Stags’ win left some of the Blackhawks in tears.

Habitat for Humanity raises the wall

More than 75 people showed up on Thursday to welcome the Legend and Webb families to the neighborhood.
The families will be the first to occupy homes at the 2-acre Habitat for Humanity-Spokane’s Hope Meadows housing development in Deer Park.
The Webbs and Legends, who will not move into their homes until sometime in 2012, were on hand last week for the “raising of the walls” ceremony at the south Colville Avenue site. Joining them were Habitat, Lowe’s Hardware (a prime sponsor of the project) and city officials.
