Elite cyclist to race on Deer Park streets

Deer Park Physical Therapy & Fitness Center have teamed up with Spokane’s cycling club, Spokane Rocket Velo, to host the Deer Park Physical Therapy Time Trial bike race on Aug. 17.
Time trails are often regarded as a “race of truth,” with single riders being let loose every 60 seconds in a race against the clock along this 13-mile course starting near North and Eighth streets and finishing near Colville Avenue and Fourth Street.

Smith leads in early primary election returns

Incumbent Seventh District Sen. John Smith easily beat back challenges from a pair of fellow Republicans in the Aug. 6 primary election.
Smith has garnered 8,631 votes in the preliminary ballot count on Wednesday afternoon. Brian Dansel sits in second place with 4,900 votes and appears to be Smith’s opponent in the general election.
Mike Brunson is in third place with 3,618 votes.

City gearing up for Main Street construction

City officials expect construction on the first section of south Main Street could begin within the next week.
Director of Community Services Roger Krieger said a pre-construction meeting with Cargile Construction will be held early next week and he would be surprised if the actual work did not begin by early next week.
The project will rebuild Main Street from the U.S. Highway 395 entrance to Crawford Avenue.
The first section from the highway to the “H” Street roundabout will be done this year with the rest of the street work planned for 2014.

Judith A. Porter, 67

Judy Ann Steffen Porter, 67, a Deer Park teacher and dairy farmer, died in a tragic car accident on Friday, Aug. 2.
She was predeceased by her husband, Larry, in 2007; and her father, Donald Steffen, in 2007.

Lillian M. Janson, 89

July 30, 2013

Lillian M. Janson of Deer Park passed peacefully, surrounded by family, at Royal Park Care Center, Spokane, on Thursday, July 18.
She was born on March 31, 1924, at St. Maries, Idaho, to Martin and Ruth Abbott. She moved with her family to the Mt. Spokane area and attended Chattaroy Elementary School and Mead High School. She married Roger Janson on June 7, 1941, and moved into the Morgan Acres area of Spokane, where their three children were born.
In 1953, the family moved to a farm north of Deer Park, where Lillian created a beautiful yard and flower gardens.

Pair arrested after shots fired at couple

Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a drive-by shooting on the Newport Highway at 7:30 p.m. on July 21.
An adult female complainant told Deputy Damon Anderberg that she and her boyfriend had been shot at multiple times by three men in a vehicle between 2:30-3 a.m.
She told Anderberg that she and her boyfriend were at a store at the intersection of Day-Mt. Spokane and Newport Highway. She said they saw 19-year-old Jarrod Markosian, 18-year-old Jesse Pollard and another adult male at the store.

Bob R. Swanson, 54

Bob R. Swanson, 54, passed away unexpectedly at the Loon Lake home he shared with his daughter and his girlfriend/mother of his children.
Bob was well loved in the community and was an avid fisherman and poker player, loved the outdoors, animals and children. He worked throughout his life as a talented welder/fabricator.
He leaves behind his girlfriend, Vickie Campbell; his parents, Robert and Marlene Swanson; three daughters, Kristen Swanson, Hannah Campbell-Bush and Cheryl Melville-Gilliam; a son, William Melville; nine grandchildren; and his four-legged best friend, Bronson.

Allen A. Ashworth, 62

Allen Austin Ashworth, 62, passed away, surrounded by his family, after an almost-successful struggle against cancer.
Allen is survived by an amazing family: Cynthia, his beloved wife and best friend for 31 years; two daughters and a son: Rachael Ashworth (Nick) of Spokane, Deborah (Eric) Good of Deer Park, and Benjamin Ashworth (Audrey) of Spokane, as well as five precious grandchildren: Lenore, Leif, Nathan, Isaac and Noah. He is also survived by two brothers and a sister.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

Starbuck receives life prison term

Clay Starbuck’s fate was sealed on June 4. Spokane County Superior Court Judge Gregory Sypolt made it official on Thursday.
Starbuck was convicted last month of premeditated first-degree murder with aggravating circumstances in the killing of his ex-wife, Chanin, in her Deer Park home in December 2011. Under state sentencing guidelines, Starbuck was required to receive a life sentence with no chance of parole for his crime. In addition, he also received a 12-month sentence for his conviction of violating human remains.

Second victim dies in Chattaroy mobile home fire

Updated July 22:
A Chattaroy couple were killed following a mobile home explosion and fire on Wednesday evening.
Investigators continue to center their investigation on the fire being deliberately set as part of a domestic dispute.
Mike Asselin, 51, who passed away on Friday, and his wife, Sheila, had been separated for the past couple of months. Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that Asselin had disconnected one of the mobile home gas tanks and then set a match to the escaping gas.
