John S. Holmes, 66

July 2, 2013

John S. Holmes, age 66, passed away on June 23, 2013.
He was born on Jan. 21, 1947. He graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Engineering.
He is survived by his wife, Patty; three sisters; and two daughters.
I will miss you, my best friend, my teacher, my husband.

Starbuck sentencing delayed

Deer Park’s Clay Starbuck will have to wait a few more weeks to learn his fate in Spokane County Superior Court.
Starbuck, facing life in prison after being convicted last month for the first-degree murder of his ex-wife, Chanin, was scheduled to be sentenced on June 27. The sentencing date has been moved to 1:30 p.m. on July 18.
Since his conviction, Starbuck and his family continues to proclaim his innocence in the December 2011 killing to various Spokane area media outlets.

Sheriff's Department seeks info on log splitter theft

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Department is seeking information on the person responsible for the theft of a $1,100 log splitter from the Big R parking lot at N15228 Newport Highway, Colbert.
The Big R store manager reported the theft on June 10.
In surveillance photos, the suspect can be seen taking the log splitter and placing it in an orange 1990's Chevrolet-style truck.
Spokane County Sheriff's Detective Mark Newton is asking for any assistance in identifying the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to contact Newton at 477-2683.

Viola B. Taylor, 90

June 18, 2013

A private graveside service will be held at a later date for longtime area resident Viola Bernice Taylor, 90, who passed away on June 9, 2013, at the Providence Long Term Care Center.
She and her, husband, Albert, farmed in the Loon Lake/Deer Lake area for many years. They also owned and operated second-hand stores in Oregon, Idaho and Arizona and motels in Idaho and Oregon.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert; and one daughter, Leila L. Marshall.

Area duo completes second Whitworth softball season

June 13, 2013

A pair of former Riverside High School softball standouts completed their second seasons with the Whitworth University team.
Infielder Peyton McMahon played 18 games this season and went 6 for 10 at the plate with a home run and 3 RBI.
Pitcher Megan Fisher, an exchange student at RHS from Cranbrook, B.C., saw action in 23 games (12 as a starter).
Fisher finished with a 3-3 record and a 7.73 ERA in 71 innings pitched.
The Pirates finished the season with a 23-20 record.

Dorothy B. Smith, 84

Dorothy “Dee” (Bowers) Smith, a longtime resident of Deer Park, was called heavenward on Saturday, June 8, 2013.
Dee had four children: Rueben (Dale) Bowers, Bob Bowers, Carol McDaniel, and Linda Gilbert; 14 grandchildren, R.D. Bowers Jr. (deceased), Richard Bowers, Cyrena Lehman, Dawn James Robert Bowers, Amanda Bowers, Chad Bowers, Rachelle Bowers (deceased), Mike Gembala, Matt Gembala, Troy Bowers, Whitney Bowers-Steinauer; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Deer Park School Board changes course, hires Hanson as superintendent

In a surprising move, the Deer Park School Board has decided to go with Curriculum Director Travis Hanson as its new superintendent.
Hanson will replace Becky Berg on July 1.
The school board had offered the job to Spokane School District 81's Executive Director of Secondary School's Jon Swett last month, but could not come to a contract agreement.

David L. Kendall, 70

June 5, 2013

David Lee Kendall, 70, passed away on Nov. 23, 2012. He was born on Sept. 11, 1942, in Spokane to Lee and Evelyn Kendall. After graduating from Deer Park High School in 1960, he attended Columbia Basin Junior College and Whitworth University. He received his Master’s Degree in Sports Medicine from Indiana University in Bloomington.
He was at the University of Pacific in Stockton, Calif., as instructor and head trainer for six year. He married Elaine C. “Becky” Beck on June 10, 1967 in Stockton.

Alfred P. Christoffersen, 82

Alfred Paul “Bud” Christoffersen passed away in his home on the morning of Oct. 13, 2012; his wife Patricia (Bakken) of 52 years was by his side.
Bud was born in Lake Preston, S.D., on Dec. 12, 1930, and resided there with his family until the passing of his parents, Alfred, a World War I veteran, and Pauline (Hansen) Christoffersen. Since Bud was only 15 years old when his parents died, he was sent to Montana to live and work for relatives and to complete high school.

Charles L. Scott, 71

June 5, 2013

Charles was born in Fort Lewis, Wash., to Clyde and Charlotte Scott on June 29, 1941. He passed away in his favorite chair at home.
Charles attended Rogers High School and after graduation joined the Navy. Upon returning from his service in the Navy, Charles obtained a position with the Western Fruit Express Railroad where he worked for 27 ½ years.
