Deer Park narrowly misses 100

Deer Park came close but just missed out on topping the century mark today.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Deer Park reached 98 degrees at 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. (it registered 97 degrees at 3 p.m.) today.
The Weather Channel listed the city’s high temperature today at 99 degrees.
Intellicast.com, which tracks historical weather data for every zip code, reported Deer Park’s record high for July 29 is 99 degrees set in 2003.
Deer Park will have another chance to top 100 degrees tomorrow as the forecast calls for high temperature of 97 degrees.

Don J. Sappington, 81

July 29, 2014

Don Joe Sappington, age 81, born on March 28, 1933, in Texarkana, Texas, entered into rest on July 20, 2014, in Spokane Valley. Don was a resident of Loon Lake for 12 years.
He graduated from high school in Great Falls, Mont., in 1952. Don served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean Conflict earning the National Defense Service Ribbon.
Don worked on aircrafts in Texas doing fiberglass lay-up bonding and air tunnel testing. He also worked as a sawyer at a lumber company in Idaho.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing and building and flying model aircrafts.

Reserve deputy finds 32-year-old stolen revolver

A Stevens County Reserve Deputy contacted a Spokane County Sheriff’s Office detective last week to let him know he had located a gun on Craigslist that he was interested in buying
After checking the serial number on the gun being sold at Medical Lake, it was determined the Smith & Wesson .38 caliber revolver had been stolen in Tacoma in 1982.

Lake Spokane study planned at Suncrest

Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey will collect groundwater and aquatic plant samples near the Suncrest community for a study on excess nutrients in Lake Spokane.
USGS will begin sampling in August.
Too many nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus in the Spokane River and Lake Spokane cause depletion of dissolved oxygen that fish and other aquatic life need to survive. Excess nutrients can also cause toxic algae blooms that are harmful to human health.

Fire crews battle large Clayton hay fire

Fire crews spent Wednesday afternoon trying to contain a large semi-truck hay fire at Lazy L Farm Service and Supply at 4513 Bellstar Road in Clayton.
Fire crews from Stevens County Fire District 1’s Station 1 in Clayton and Spokane County Fire District No. 4’s Stations 41 (Deer Park), Station 42 (Chattaroy) and Station 46 (Riverside) to the scene. Chewelah Rural Ambulance was also dispatched as a precautionary measure.
Stevens County Sheriff’s deputies were also needed to stem the sudden amount of traffic on Bellstar Road.

Fay Reilly, 83

Fay Reilly, 83 years of life, was born on Jan. 13, 1931, in Spokane to John Frank Reilly and Barbara Cox Reilly. His first school was Glenora south of Spokane.
In the second grade, the family moved to Williams Valley west of Deer Park where he attended Williams Valley School until consolidation. Fay then attended Clayton School for two years and graduated from Deer Park High School with the Class of 1948.

Lester W. May, 79

July 11, 2014

Lester William May, 79 years of life, passed away on July 4, 2014, at his home in Chattaroy.
He was born on Jan. 22, 1935, in Leavenworth, Wash. As a young boy his family moved to Spokane and then to the Chattaroy area where he attended the Mt. Kit Carson School and the Riverside schools.
During his high school days he met his wife, Louise (Mitzi) Rhoads. They were married on Jan. 22, 1954, and celebrated 60 years of marriage this past January.
He retired from Kaiser Mead after 32 years as a machinist.
