Transportation group plans regional meeting

September 10, 2013

Transportation challenges and priorities for the Northeast Washington area will be the focus of a Sept. 17 meeting with the Washington State Transportation Commission when it visits Colville. Local officials from Ferry, Pend Oreille and Stevens counties, the cities of Colville, Newport and Republic and the Kalispel and Spokane tribes will participate as part of the commission’s statewide public outreach effort.

Donald G. Forgey, 75

September 9, 2013

Former Deer Park resident, Donald G Forgey, 75, passed away in his home in Helena, Mont., on Sept. 3, 2013. Services will be held at his home in Helena on Sept. 14, 2013 at 3 p.m.
Don was born on Oct. 7, 1937, in Blaine County Mont. As a young boy his family moved to White Center, Wash. He attended Highline High School and joined the Navy as a teenager.
He was stationed in San Diego where he met his first wife Joyce. They had two daughters, Brenda and Connie.
He later moved back to Washington and met his second wife Karen. They also had two daughters, Theresa and Sarah.

Stags ground up Cougars in season opener

The Deer Park Stags kept it simple and sweet in rolling over Chewelah 31-7 on Friday in the season opener for both schools.
The Stags, who won their seventh straight season opener (six of them against the Cougars), kept the ball on the ground, rushing 44 times for 218 yards. The Deer Park quarterback tandem of Nic Clough and Daniel Paulson needed to throw the ball only seven times in keeping the Chewelah defense on the field for the majority of the game.

Investigation continues into fatal cycle crash

Spokane County Sheriff's deputies continue to investigate a fatal motorcycle accident on Blanchard Road in Elk early Thursday morning.
Deputies responded to the accident on Blanchard and Jackson roads at around 1 a.m. When they arrived they found a deceased 42-year-old male rider.
 Investigators say the rider failed to negotiate a curve on Blanchard Road and struck a tree.  At this time it is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision. 
The Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office will provide identity and cause of death after an autopsy is completed.

State details marijuana retail license plan

The rush for one of the state's retail marijuana licenses is about to begin.
The Liquor Control Board will issue 334 licenses statewide sometime next spring. Application review will start in November.
The board will issue 18 licenses for Spokane County, although 11 of them will be set aside for businesses in the cities of Spokane and Spokane Valley. The remaining seven can be issued to businesses anywhere in the county.
The board set aside four licenses for anywhere in Stevens County and two for anywhere in Pend Oreille County. King County will receive 61 licenses.

Gas leak shuts down portion of Main Street

A portion of Deer Park’s north Main Street was closed for more than an hour after a gas leak was discovered at CC’s Pawn on Monday morning.
Spokane County Fire District No. 4 personnel shut down two blocks of the street after a gas leak was reported at around 9:30 a.m. Fire crews evacuated all the businesses on the west side of the street from Stylz to the Deer Park Lube Center while they tracked down the cause of the leak.

Stags, Rams await final preseason tune-up

The Deer Park and Riverside football teams will get ready for their season openers on Friday with the annual Stag jamboree on Monday at 5 p.m. at Deer Park High School.
The controlled scrimmage will also include teams from Chewelah and Lakeside.
The Stags open their season at 7 p.m. Friday at home against Chewelah. The Rams open their season 7:30 p.m. Friday at the University of Idaho Kibbie Dome against Timberlake.
The Springdale Chargers, who will play in a jamboree at Ritzville on Friday, open their season 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at Oroville.

Deer Park students hurt in bus crash

August 28, 2013

The first day of school for some Deer Park students had a memorable ending, as they were involved in a school bus-car accident at the on Herman Road on Wednesday afternoon.
According to KHQ-TV, it appeared the driver of the car pulled out of public driveway and did not see the bus as it traveled on the unimproved road.

WSP to offer virtual ride-alongs on Thursday

Now is your chance to get an 18-hour inside look at Washington State Patrol operations, courtesy of Twitter and Facebook. WSP will present a #daywithWSP, tweeting events that are happening around the state in real-time, starting at 6 a.m. on Aug. 29.
Most people are familiar with troopers in white cars who respond to collisions and disabled vehicles. Less well-known are WSP employees who play key roles in keeping the public safe on the roads, at their places of business and in their homes.

We Heart Deer Park attracts hundreds

Hundreds of Deer Park students and parents flocked to Arcadia Elementary School on Monday for the second annual We Heart Deer Park celebration.
Sponsored by several area churches, the celebration featured several community organization informational booths, free school supplies and various forms of games and musical entertainment. The GreenHouse Community Center passed out free food boxes while a pair of barbers offered free haircuts to students.
The event also allowed students to all visit their classrooms before the start of school on Aug. 28.
