DPHS's Dunn named ESD 101's top teacher

Deer Park High School teacher Jeffrey Dunn was selected as Educational Service District 101’s teacher of the year.
Dunn, who as works as an English teacher at DPHS, as a secondary Learning Assistance Program coordinator and as site coordinator of the Cornerstone After and Summer School Program (funded through a 21st Century After School grant), competed for the state teacher of the year title last week.
Katie Brown, a middle school teacher at Shuksan Middle School in Bellingham, was chosen over eight other candidates, including Dunn, for the title.

Greyhound spikers sweep Lady Stags

The Pullman Greyhounds, holding a decided height advantage, swept the Deer Park Lady Stags 25-14, 25-14, 25-21 in Great Northern League volleyball action on Tuesday.
The win pushed the Greyhounds’ GNL record to 2-0, while the Lady Stags fell to 0-3.
Pullman opened up the match with a 7-0 lead in the first game. An ace from Deer Park’s Sierra English Largent finally ended the Greyhounds’ early scoring surge.
A kill from the Lady Stags’ Callie Bostic trimmed the lead to 13-8, only to see the Greyhounds respond with a 7-2 run and coast to a first game victory.

September 23rd

Bill Cossey

September 23, 2013

Bill Cossey died on the l6th of September at home with his family at his side.
Bill graduated from the University of Idaho in 1957 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He was sent to Germany as a company commander of a guided missile site.
In 1965, Major Cossey was sent to Vietnam to be in charge of finding small groups of insurgents and directing air strikes. Viet Nam honored him with a Silver Star and the United States awarded him the Bronze Star..

Riverside v-ballers sweep Newport

The Riverside volleyball team ran its Northeast A League and overall record to 3-1 with a convincing 25-16, 25-14, 25-21 home win over Newport on Thursday.
The Lady Rams showed off a balanced attack with Sydney Spray, Kyra Phillips-Winkler, Holly Nelson and Hayley Pace all contributed five kills in the win. Phillips-Warner anchored the defensive effort with two blocks.
Having taken the first game, the Lady Rams took control of the second one by rattling off six straight points to take a 12-7 lead. The surge was highlighted by one of Phillips-Winkler’s blocks.

DNR lifts statewide burn ban

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced that the statewide burn ban on DNR-protected lands has been rescinded. The fire danger has been reduced because of recent rainfall and moderating temperatures.
Restrictions set by local authorities are not affected by DNR’s action. Potential burners and the public at large are reminded to check with those local authorities before burning.

City crunching numbers to find road funds

The city of Deer Park, which was shut out of receiving a Public Trust Fund loan this year to build a new industrial road near the airport, will look at issuing bonds to complete the $3.6 million project.
City officials have received $1.8 million in federal Economic Administration Development funds. Those funds will not be released until the city comes up with $1.8 million in matching funds.

Opportunistic Rams out run Stags

When opportunity knocks, the Riverside football team was more than happy to answer the door.
The opportunistic Rams defense stymied the Deer Park Stag attack for most of the game and came away with a 21-16 win on Friday.
The Riverside win snapped a five-game losing streak to Deer Park and improved the Rams’ overall record to 1-1. Deer Park fell to 1-1.
“That was a pretty exciting rivalry game,” said Riverside head coach Tom Griggs, who saw his team force five turnovers over the course of the game. “We capitalized on the shots we got.”

9/11 memorial ride roars through DP

More than a 100 motorcyclists and other motorists took part in the annual 9/11 Memorial Ride that included a stop in Deer Park.
The ride, which also included the Spirit of America Foundation Memorial, left the American Legion Post home in Colville on Saturday morning. The group made stops at the Chewelah American Legion Post and Deer Park Eagles No. 3564 lodge later in the morning.
Spokane American Legion riders joined the group in Newport before heading to the Post Falls American Legion Post.

Water boiling closes down S-dale schools

September 14, 2013

A broken water main forced town of Springdale officials to issue a boil order before city residents use water from the town’s drinking water system.
In addition to the boil order, the water main break forced the early closure of schools in the Mary Walker School District.

"Drive Hammered" patrols yield 119 arrests

Law enforcement agencies in Spokane, Ferry and Pend Oreille counties stopped and arrested 119 motorists in the recent “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.
The campaign, which ran from Aug. 16-Sept. 2, targeted motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Last year, the extra patrols, funded by a Washington Transportation Safety Commission grant, arrested 133 motorists.
The patrols are part of “Target Zero,” which hopes to end all traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030.
