Two arrested after U.S. 395 car chase

A police chase that started in Spokane Valley, traveled along U.S. Highway 395 near Deer Park and ended near the Wandermere Bridge with the arrest of two men.
Spokane Valley Sheriff's Deputies David Lawhorn and Lamont Petersen responded to a suspicious vehicle call at E6623 Trent Ave. Both deputies approached the suspicious vehicle on a dead-end road. When the driver of the vehicle saw the deputies, he accelerated towards Petersen's marked patrol vehicle at a high rate of speed with no lights on.

Lady Stags clinch playoff berth with West Valley sweep

The Deer Park volleyball team clinched a District VII tournament berth with a 25-7, 25-15, 25-19 win over West Valley on Tuesday.
The win boosted the Lady Stags’ Great Northern League record to 3-7 and eliminated the winless Eagles from any postseason action.
“They gave us a real good match,” said Deer Park head coach Jack Wood on the Eagles’ effort.

AHCF inmate killed in Stevens County logging accident

For the second time in a year, an inmate from the Airway Height Correctional Facility was killed while working with a Department of Natural Resources clean-up crew in Stevens County.
Daniel J. Hall, 47, was killed Thursday afternoon while helping clean up recently logged property, although details regarding the accident have not been released.
Last October, another inmate was killed in Stevens County when he was electrocuted while cutting down a tree near power lines.

Liquor Control Board marches toward I-502 implementation

The Washington State Liquor Control Board (WSLCB) will file the necessary CR103 for Initiative 502 later this week. Filing the CR103 is the formal procedure for adoption of the proposed rules for the implementation of I-502 and the final step in the rulemaking process.
These rules will serve as the basis for Washington’s newly created recreational marijuana market and are the result of 10 months of research and public input. Thirty days after adoption the rules will become effective, November 16.

Stags, Blackhawks hungry for a league win

The Deer Park Stags travel to Cheney for a 7 p.m. game on Friday in a battle of two teams searching for their first Great Northern League win.
The Stags fell to 0-2 (1-5 overall) in the GNL last Friday with an 18-7 loss to West Valley. The Blackhawks also sport a 0-2 GNL mark (4-2 overall) with their 30-0 loss to East Valley last week.
The Blackhawks’ attack is led by the running back Austin Kline and quarterback Andrew Graham.
The teams have only one common opponent. Cheney defeated Lakeland 27-9 a week before the Hawks thumped the Stags 51-0.

Rams end non-league season in Kellogg

The Riverside Rams will complete the non-league portion of their football schedule when they travel to Kellogg for a 7 p.m. game on Friday.
A win would ensure the Rams (4-2) a winning season with a win.
The Wildcats (1-5) are coming off a 39-20 loss to Priest River in a game where Spartan quarterback Jimmy Hock threw six touchdown passes.
Kellogg’s lone win came on Sept. 27 when they defeated St. Maries 19-12. The win came four weeks after St. Maries defeated the Wildcats 48-7.

Stags look for winning formula

The Deer Park Stags return home for the first time in three weeks with hopes of ending a four-game losing streak, the longest such skein in seven years.
The Stags (0-1 in Great Northern League play and 1-4 overall) play host to West Valley (1-1, 2-3) at 7 p.m. Friday.
The Eagles, coming off a 32-14 win over Clarkston, rely maining on the running game of sophomore tandem Zeck Herford and Tevin Duke.
Quarterback Austin Lee’s passing arm has emerged in the past couple of weeks.

Rams hope to get back to winning ways

The Riverside Rams hope to get back on the winning track when they entertain Newport 7 p.m. Friday in the annual homecoming game.
The Rams (2-1 in the Northeast A League and 3-2 overall) are coming off a 34-0 loss to Freeman while the Grizzles (0-2, 3-2) outlasted the Lake City junior varsity squad 49-33 on Oct. 4.

Elizabeth R. Jacobs, 89

Elizabeth Rose “Betty” (Zaversnik) (Vosahlo) Jacobs was born on Sept. 12, 1924, in Rock Springs, Wy., to Joseph and Mari Zaversnik. She passed away on Sept. 23, 2013, in Newport at the age of 89.
Betty and her family moved from Rock Springs to the Elk-Camden area when she was in her early teens. She met and married Joe Vosahlo at a young age and they had four children, Don Vosahlo (Connie), Phyllis Sage (Gary), Arlene Casselman (Derris) and Jack Vosahlo.
Beside being a wife and mother, she was an avid painter and gardener. She loved the outdoors, doing jigsaw puzzles and reading.

Daniel I. Johnson, 61

Daniel Ira Johnson (Danny) was born on Nov. 7, 1951, to Ira William and Noreen Louise Johnson, their third of five children. Danny grew up on a dairy farm in Williams Valley west of Deer Park.
His Christian parents raised him to become the Godly man that we all loved so much. Since the family never owned a TV, after a long day of chores, they played games, and read the Bible together. As an adult, without fail, year in and year out, every morning with his bowl of Wheaties cereal, you would find Dan reading his well-worn Bible, seeking and soaking up the Word of God.
