January 20th
In a game where points were at a premium, the Colville Indians went on a 9-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to secure a 51-47 win over the Riverside Rams on Friday.
The Rams (0-7, 4-13) trimmed the Indian lead to 36-32 on a Logan Owens’ 3-pointer with 6:10 remaining.
Colville (5-2, 11-7) retaliated with baskets by Matt Hubbard, JR. Henry and Taylor Murto and a 3-pointer by Henry over the 3:30 to stretch the lead back to 45-32.
The Rams, who only shot 32 percent from the floor, tried to get back into the game, only to see the Indians stay a step ahead over the last 2:49.
The Colville Indians, sparked by a pair of Tasha Luu baskets, finally pulled away from the Riverside Lady Rams 50-38 in Northeast A League basketball action on Friday.
The Lady Rams, who cut the Indians’ lead to 42-36 on a Courtney Davis basket with 5 minutes to play, saw Colville close out the game with an 8-2 run, sparked by Luu’s performance.
The win improved Colville’s NE-A record to 6-1 (11-5 overall), while Riverside fell to 1-6, 6-11.
The Deer Park City Council has begun the first steps in installing a surveillance camera at Swinyard Park.
The council agreed to purchase $9,400 in remote camera equipment for the park and a central control system in city hall from WOW, a wireless company in Spokane.
The city has set aside $21,700 for video surveillance equipment in this year’s budget. The equipment is designed to control crime problems in the park and as a safety measure at city hall.
Director of Community Services Roger Krieger expects the surveillance equipment to be operational by this spring.
January 18th
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Jan. 21 at the Chattaroy Community Church, E3711 Chattaroy Road, for area resident Muriel (Smith) Oberg, 76, who passed away on Jan. 14, 2012.
Born on Nov. 5, 1935 in her aunt's log cabin near Newport, to George and Rena Smith, she married Leonard Oberg in 1954 and together they raised four children in Spokane.
She went to work for Pacific NW Bell in 1954 and retired from Qwest in 1991.
Robert Allen Smith passed away on Jan. 10, 2012, at the age of 81. He was the second of seven sons born on Aug. 27, 1930, in Hayford, Wash., to George and Ruth (Crofoot) Smith.
Robert had fond memories of spending time in his grandparents’ orchard along Peach Crest in Old Kettle Falls and of living near the “ Milk Bottle” in Spokane. He graduated from Newport High School and EWCE (now EWU.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, then a long-time draftsman and handyman.
The Deer Park boys basketball team got five points from Blake Starbuck in the final 2 minutes to edge the Cheney Blackhawks 54-52 on Tuesday.
Starbuck tied the game at 50-50 with a short jumper and gave the Stags a 51-50 lead with a free throw with 1:02 remaining. The Blackhawks took their final lead on a basket by John Gingrich only to see Starbuck help the Stags regain the lead a 53-52 with two more free throws.
Uconn Peone’s free throw with 13 seconds left gave Deer Park the final margin of victory.
“They’re starting to play together,” said Stag head coach Ken Ryan.
The Cheney Blackhawks unleashed a combination of an aggressive man-to-man defense and dominant post play to defeat the Deer Park girls basketball team 47-27 on Tuesday.
The Cheney defense stymied the Deer Park offense for most of the game. The Lady Stags never led in the game as the Blackhawks jumped out to an early 12-4 lead.
Cheney’s 5-foot-11 forward Allie Brown keyed the early surge by hitting her first four shots.
January 12th
In what has become a yearly tradition, community fair organizers have begun fretting about the state’s financial commitment to the events.
With the Legislature looking to close a $3 billion budget shortfall this spring, the $2 million the state spends on fair funding is on the chopping block.
Clayton Community Fair Manager Janice Purdy said her event receives about $3,000 a year in state funds. That money must be used for youth premium awards, ribbons and trophies.
January 11th
The Riverside girls basketball team, using a balance attack, defeated the Chewelah Cougars 47-34 for their first Northeast A League win in four tries.
The Lady Rams were finally able to put some distance between themselves and the Cougars with a 9-3 run to end the second quarter. The offensive spurt was highlighted by a three-point shot by Brielle Supanchick at the halftime buzzer.
First-year Riverside coach Buddy Wood was pleased with the way his team ran the offense, especially the way they moved the ball on the perimeter looking for the open shot.
The Chewelah Cougars broke open a close game with a 7-0 run to end the third quarter and another 23-5 surge in the fourth quarter as the defeated the Riverside Rams 63-37 on Tuesday.
The win improved the Cougars’ Northeast A League record to 3-1 (11-3 overall) while the Rams fell to 0-4, 4-10.
Leading on 30-29 midway through the third quarter, the Cougars used three-pointers from Ben Johnstone and Caleb Wiese to take a 40-29 lead into the final stanza.
