A funeral service is pending with Lauer Funeral Home, Deer Park, for Deer Park resident Charles M. Winn, 87, who passed away on Jan. 1, 2012.
Born on Dec. 25, 1924, in Nampa, Idaho, he worked as a machinist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Bureau of Reclamation. He moved to Deer Park 15 years ago.
Mr. Winn was an accomplished woodcraftsman and artist.
A daughter, Sharon Collier of Deer Park, passed away in 2007.
When the going got tough, the Newport Grizzlies turned to “Wiley Time” to get thing moving in the right direction.
Jake Wiley, the Grizzlies’ 6-foot-7 senior, scored a game-high 22 points (12 in the second half) as Newport put away the Riverside Rams 50-41 on Saturday in the regular season finale for both teams.
Newport, which led on 19-17 at halftime, opened up a 40-30 lead in the third quarter on the strength of 10 points from Wiley.
The Rams (0-10 in the Northeast A League) refused to go away easily.
The Newport girls basketball team awoke its sleeping offense to pull away from the Riverside Lady Rams 57-35 in the regular season finale for both teams.
The Lady Grizzlies, who trailed 19-14 midway through the second quarter, went on an 11-3 run to open the third quarter to break the game open.
Sparking the Newport run was junior guard Courtney Weise, who buried a pair of 3-pointers. Her second long-range shot gave Newport a 36-22 lead.
Weise would later earn an old fashioned 3-point play to extend the Lady Grizzlies’ advantage to 45-24 going into the fourth quarter.
