Rodeo pair heading to national competition

Peyton Rose is heading back to Gallup, N.M., only this time the Deer Park teenager is bringing a teammate.
Rose, a freshman-to-be at Deer Park High School, qualified as a barrel racer at the Wrangler Junior High School National Finals Rodeo for the second straight year. She will also team up with fellow DPHS eighth grader Cole White in the ribbon roping competition.
The rodeo finals run from June 26-July 2 in Gallup.
Rose and White qualified for the national rodeo after placing the top four in their events at a series of rodeos last fall and this spring.

Joe H. Malek, 75

The Good Lord took our most loving and caring husband, father and grandpa, Joseph H. “Papa Joe” Malek on June 15 after a very short battle with cancer.
Joe was born in South Dakota on Feb. 9, 1936 to Lucy and Max Malek. Joe graduated from Deer Park High School in 1955 and attended Eastern Washington University.
He married Margie (Tobeck) in 1955 and they enjoyed 54 years together.
After college, he was in broadcasting and was program director for Columbia Basin Community College in Pasco, Wash. He also owned and operated many businesses.

Theresa E. Patrick, 91

A memorial mass was said on June 27 in Colbert at St. Joseph Church for Deer Park resident Theresa E. Patrick, 91, who passed away on June 17 in Chattaroy.
Born in Norman, Okla., in 1920 to Otto and Mary Newman, the family moved to California, where Theresa married Michael Patrick in 1940.
She worked as a secretary for many years for Rockwell Corp. (now Boeing) on the Apollo space program. After she and her husband moved to Idaho in 1972, she worked at North Idaho College until her retirement in 1986.
She was a member of Catholic Daughters and St. Thomas Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene.

Norella Bosold-Umphenour, 73

Norella “Bernie” Bosold-Umphenour, 73, went to be with the Lord, accompanied by His Angels, on June 12, 2011, after a brief but valiant fight against lung cancer.
She was born on June 29, 1937, in Superior, Minn., to Bernard “Barney” and Lillian Bowles. She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane in 1955. She later married Julius B. Bosold and had five children.
After 22 years with Banner Furnace and Fuel Co. as a credit manager, she retired in 2003. Prior to that, she worked at Boyle Fuel and in earlier years as a school bus driver on the Bryant School route.

Myron Brockmeyer, 83

June 21, 2011

A service will be held at 4 p.m. on June 23 at the Glencairn Memorial Garden at Hayden Lake, Idaho, for former Chattaroy resident Myron E. “Brock” Brockmeyer, 83, who passed away on June 14.

Ernest W. Christiansen, 87

June 21, 2011

Ernest W. “Bill” Christiansen, who was born on Sept. 4, 1923, in Pleasant Grove, Utah, died in Deer Park on June 12.
Mr. Christiansen was a naval veteran during World War II, serving aboard the historic flagship USS Augusta.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and his first wife, Florence.

Gordon P. Storey, 93

June 21, 2011

Funeral services are pending for Clayton/Deer Park resident Gordon P. Storey, 93, who passed away on June 20.
Lauer Funeral Home, Deer Park, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary P. Covington, 76

June 21, 2011

A funeral mass was June 18 at St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church in Ford for former area resident Mary P. “Phil” Covington, 76, who passed away on June 11 in Grand Coulee, Wash.
Burial followed the mass at Hubert Cemetery in Ford with Strate Funeral Home of Grand Coulee is in charge of arrangements.

Deer Park Ambulance pair receive EMS recognition

A pair of Deer Park Ambulance members were recently honored for their excellence of service to the community.
Paramedic Ryan Schilining and Emergency Medical Technician-Advanced Roy Varney received Provider of the Year awards.
Schilining received the Responder of the Year Award from the Spokane Emergency Medical Services Council, while Varney received the Les Parkhurst Award for excellence in emergency medical services (EMS) from Stevens County Fire District No. 1.

John O. Handegard, 86

A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. on on June 18 at the Peaceful Valley Church in Elk for longtime Chattaroy resident John O. Handegard, 86, who passed away on June 11 at the Hospice House in Spokane.
The burial will follow the service at the Chattaroy Cemetery. The family suggests memorials may be made to Peaceful Valley Church, Agape Fund, P.O. Box 9, Elk, WA 99009. At the request of Mr. Handegard, a special memorial would be for others to volunteer their time in helping the elderly or others in need.
Lauer Funeral Home, Deer Park, will be in charge of arrangements.
