Motor vehicle violations led to the arrest of a 40-year-old Elk man on Aug. 14 for possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Shover was patrolling the area of 37000 North Newport Highway about noon when he spotted a Toyota pickup that had an obscured license plate, broken windshield and no mud flaps. He stopped the truck and identified the driver as James E. White.
Deer Park football fans will get a look at the new high school track although the peek may not happen at the Stags’ Sept. 9 season football opener.
Steve Howard, the school district’s maintenance supervisor, does not expect the work to be completed until the end of September or early October.
Beynon Atlas, a Tarkett Sports Co., headquartered in Portland, Ore., started work on the new track this summer. The company has removed the existing track, which was laid in 1980 (the year the high school was built) and resurfaced in 1998.
No services are planned for former area resident Everett E. Williams, 82, who passed away on Aug. 9 in Spokane.
Born on Nov. 21, 1928, to the late Edward and Minnie (Wallace) Williams in Darlington, Idaho, he moved often growing up and therefore attended many schools, but graduated from Deer Park High School in 1947. After high school he joined the Air Force, where he also took college classes.
He later became the manager of Sprouse Reitz stores in the Hillyard and Garland locations before moving to Colville to manage the Sprouse Reitz there.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 19 at the Cheney United Methodist Church with a luncheon to follow for former Chattaroy Elementary School teacher Irene Rufer, 92, who passed away Aug. 8 in Spokane.
Born on Sept. 4, 1918, in Hillsboro, Ore., to Jacob and Flora (Wright) Rufer, she attended schools in Holbrook and Silverton, Ore. She attended high school in Spangle, Wash.
She continued her education at Eastern Washington University where she received her bachelor’s degree in education and later received her master's degree.
